dbborroughs' Journal Eddie congrats on your Tony nom. You deserve it and you're in fine fine company. YOU WERE ROBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You gave one of the best performances of the year and no nomination. Its a crime. The play (nominated for best play) would be nothing with out you. You're Broadway history, most of the rest will be long forgotten. It had to be done it was that sort of a moment.... Just finished reading the three Tokyo Pop editions of Lupin III. And they thought this would make a good anime why? The first volume is beyond redemption its sex and violence and so hateful to women I could only believe it was the work of a women hater. Worse the stories aren't very good. The second volume is better and it becomes apparent that there is only a limited over all narrative thread as people who die in one chapter comes back in another. Its literal cartoon violence, but the violence is rather excesive. Volume three is shifting more toward the anime Lupin, but there is still a alot of sex, excuse me, fucking and shooting. (hey Monkey Punch goes out of his way to use the term.) The stories are better but they are still unremarkable. Why did this take off? Obviously reading the almost 600 pages of comics in a couple of day span was never the intention of Monkey Punch. My guess is that if each story, or chapter was read a day or week or what ever apart it wouldn't be so bad, but some of the stories really are nasty. Lupin is hateful in the manga. He will kill anyone and rape anyone to get what he wants. He is not a charming rogue but a dangerous psychopath who's witty which is suppose to make him loveable. It doesn't, it just makes him more annoying. Just because he occasionally gets hurt, or killed doesn't make his nastiness easier to take. The stories are crappy. Monkey Punch is a really limited writer. He wanders all over the place and writes like a petulant man child with an eternal hard on. Yes it gets better as it goes on but better is not really good. Its okay, nothing more. If It wasn't something to read at lunch I wouldn't have bothered. If I hadn't gotten the books all at once I never would have gotten the second one after I finished the first. Thankfully I did get them greatly discounted so it worked out to half off the cover price so I don't feel ripped off. Personally I prefer the anime which takes the best of the manga and runs with it. The stories and the style is better here simply because people who can tell a good story are doing what they do best with out Monkey Punch's vile over blown and rather rude touchs. (If you read the manga and then see Castle of Caligostro you'll see the yin and yang of the character. Monkey Punch hated what Miyazaki did with his character, which was reduce his libido and curb the violence. I don't blame Monkey Punch for being upset since it showed very clearly how a creation can be greater than the limited talents of it creator.) And they may win the division with a win sunday and a detroit loss ... keep your fingers crossed |
